 Periodontics (periodontia, Periodontology): The branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the periodontium. Also Periodontics is the dental specialty that relates specifically to the care and maintenance of these tissues.Definition of periodontium refers to specialized tissues that both surround and support the teeth maintaining them in the maxillary and mandibuler   bone.The word come from Greek terms (Peri) meaning around and (Odont) meaning (tooth) literally which mean around the tooth. Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious diseases that result in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. Risk factors for the development of periodontal disease are smoking, hormonal changes in women, poor nutrition resulting in deficiencies in calcium and certain vitamins (especially vitamins B and C), diabetes, gingivitis, stress, immunosuppressive illnesses, genetic susceptibility and certain medications (including chemotherapy drugs and those that reduce the production of saliva such as antidepressants, antihistamines, antiepileptics, and calcium channel blockers).Sjogren’s syndrome.


INTRODUCTION AND JUSTIFICTION:

 Pain is inevitable in many or most general dental procedures and anticipation of pain is major source of dental patient anxiety. Contemporary knowledge and techniques allow most dental procedure to proceed with little, if any discomfort. The course will present the basic science foundation of clinical anesthesia, skill in exodonia. The course also emphasize on the dental management of medically compromise patient.
